THE LAND OF THE WEEPING GODS

A documentary on Spinalonga

Documentary summary

A real scenario, with Spinalonga a blot on civilization. A treatise presented in words, narrations, tears, pain, hope for life, through the eyes and lips, or whatever left, of the leading 330 lepers. A tribute to those who, for 53 years, were cut off from society by the sickle of Destiny and thrown in Spinalonga to die. Their lives, a daily struggle to tear down the dark walls of prejudice and to replace the horror of Spinalonga with hope for human life, even though everything around them led to death. Finally came the miracle, the cure, the grand illusion of freedom; the obstacle, the human world, where no one was left waiting for them.

During the occupation the island was carved out of the coast for defense purposes and a fort was built there by the Venetians.
